The tourney's theme will be the "Ruy Lopez." See the following thread to find out more: en.wikipedia.org If you are interested in signing up for this tourney, please do so in this thread. Invitations will be made on a first come, first serve basis. If enough members whose rating falls in this tourney's range, another group(s) may be initiated. Unless the majority of participants for this tourney request otherwise, the time control for the Major Tourney will be 3 days + 2 days < 5 days. The tourney is scheduled to commence August 15. manijer-wmp3 04-Aug-10, 16:48	Ruy Lopez tourney I am interested, but prefer a little faster pace if possible. I've only done one other tourney where we had a theme. In that one we opened with the same 6 moves then progressed as we wanted from there. Is that how this one would work: e4 e5, nf3 nc6, bb5?
tennesseehiker 04-Aug-10, 17:00	Unfortunately, 3 days + 2 days < 5 days is the quickest scheme possible in a GK mini tournament to the best of my knowledge. You may wish to verify this by reading GK's mini tournament rules and its FAQ, though.
brigadecommander 04-Aug-10, 17:59	a snails pace 3-days per move is in reality very slow chess. 5-days per move is absurd!! I would love 1-day per move. But 3-days is the best we can get. I say here and now i am willing to finish each game in three days if my opponents have a desire to do so. If i am in a bad position i will move just a quick. Please enter me in this Tourney!
untateve 04-Aug-10, 18:54	I won't be playing in this particular tourney but I feel compelled to assert that a 5-day per move game is not necessarily absurd. Some of us feel the need to really study our moves as we are only learning positional play. Additionally, some of us have jobs/careers, spouses, children and a host of other responsibilities. For me, five days sometimes doesn't feel like enough time as I calculate, review, wash, rinse, repeat.

Whats good about running several tourneys at the same time is those that need more time can play in a longer duration tourney. I would guess that most 2000+ players would like a swifter time control. I have a lot of responsibilities also.... To many classes, to many Hobbies,work 9+ hrs a day. Yet i find rest while playing chess. So i guess a 5+ day per move is not absurd! at the same time those players who desire to play faster should have that chance too...BC
caknight 04-Aug-10, 20:44	Time Control 3 days + 2 days < 5 days is not that slow, after all this is not blitz. As to the assumption that most 2000+ players would like swifter time controls I find it just the opposite. Most Experts - Masters that are not using chess program to make their moves for them like to take more time to go deeper in variations that they are analyzing. I have seen 14 day time controls in Correspondence Chess.
brigadecommander 04-Aug-10, 21:20	point??? i play in clubs under tournament time controls. Its a far cry from Blitz and even further from 3- days per move. I am 'NOT' using a chess computer to make my moves. I make the same moves across the board as i do on gameknot and just about as fast. The Masters i know move swiftly too and go nuts waiting 5 days for someone to make up there mind. My coach (a GM) moves even faster. What is your point???
caknight 04-Aug-10, 22:30	Point I was addressing time controls & was not making any comparison to brigadecommander. I have been playing chess for over 50 years & have played many GM in my time & yes some do like to move swiftly but in general it is my feeling that most correspondence players like to spend some time on their analysis. My point about program users is simply that they tend to move very quickly in almost all their game. This post was about time controls & that is all I was talking about. If brigadecommander likes to move fast that is their choice but not everyone that will be entering the tournament has the luxury of her youth & skill. I for one have left my blitz style of play in the 70's along with my impatience of youth.
easy19 04-Aug-10, 23:51	Extra point I like to move fast also specially wen i am on line.. but games under 3 days time limit are just a bit to fast... And not because i am slow or need time to analyze.. but i need time to work cook dinner walk in the forest spend time with family, sleep a bit with etc etc

archduke_piccolo 05-Aug-10, 01:06	Well, I was about to comment... ,,, but I will anyway. In play with some of the highest rated opponents on GK I have found quite a few of them do take far more than the 3 days to make a move, if the time control allows them to do so. I also used to like to play reasonably quickly, but that was when I kept the games to about 6 at once. More tended to slow me down. Over the last year I've had anything up to 20 games going, and have rather welcomed the slower time controls in some of them (1 tournament allows up to a fortnight for a move). Even then, I feel the overall quality of my play has declined a bit - become less consistent, at any rate. That my rating has 'stayed' above 2100 I attribute to the fair number of opponents timing out. As far as these tournaments are concerned, I feel that the themes are, at the higher levels at any rate, too broad. But that's just me... Cheers, Ion

easy19 05-Aug-10, 10:33	I have not made up my mind yet do i like the ruy lopez? well not really wen i am confronted with it i am always have the feeling that i am running behind the facts.. and that is not something i like..   So i still have to think about it.

antagonistknight 06-Aug-10, 10:08	if it goes less than 3days+2<5 I would have to withdraw, I don't have internet over the weekends so I would end up timing out in my games.
