The Stone Wall
Janet (brigadecommander) has graciously offered her time and effort to help cultivate the chess skills -- strategics and tactics -- of the club's members who are rated 1200 and less. In this endeavor, Janet will be presenting topics like "Learn a Simple Opening" and other beginning chess concepts. She will present a series of moves, annotate them, and take questions as to her reasoning for the moves. All participants will be encouraged to ask as many questions as necessary for the participant to grasp the strategy or tactic presented. Please indicate your interest to participate in this most worthwhile project, although any lower rated member may join in the learning exercises at any time.

The Stone Wall
To all the players wishing to take part in this endeavor i bid you greetings. The purpose of this
exercise is to understand some basic Strategy and Tactics that you will need if you want to play
chess better. The game we are about to peruse was shown to me when i was very young by my
Father. It had a profound effect on me in that it opened up to me the ideas that to this day i
use to conduct myself on the chess battlefield. For make no mistake!! when you are at the chess
board you are on a battlefield. I will make use of Military terms and Rhetoric to simplify certain
ideas. The Stone Wall has its roots at least as far back as the 14th and 15th Century. Today it
not seen very often at top level play and only occasionally at the club level. It is certainly a
simple and sound opening. It is a rock solid opening as its name suggests. Yet it is not a
defensive Opening as its name also suggests. It is a offensive Opening!!. We will begin
shortly...Janet

to all who would have participated.....
I am very sorry to have to cancelled this project. Easy19 has started a coaching project and
its not a good idea to have two players with such different teaching methods going at the same
time. It would cause confusion. Easy19 is a stronger player then i am and i'm sure you all are in
better hands!!! good luck all!!!....Janet

Awww...
Well phooey, Janet! I was looking forward to getting feedback on how the project was coming
along. Don't postpone it for too long - I know there were a good number of chess players
looking forward to it.

Re: to all who would have participated
Janet,

I think I will disagree that it's not a good idea to have two players with different teaching methods going at the same time.

Some will certainly learn better from one style and some from a differing teaching style. There are also those students who will learn well from two different teachers. Two different teachers will bring two different perspectives to the game. Given that you and Easy (freddy) are both 2000+ level players, I think it clear that you each have mastered the basics necessary for a 1200 level player to learn/improve.

Your presentations of these basics will be different and but I think that in some ways, one teacher's lesson can reinforce the other teacher's lesson. Speaking for myself, I prefer to have the same concept explained/taught in differing methods as it helps me learn better.

At any rate, since our last game, I've begun to study endgames.

I agree ...
... with untateve.

Apart from anything alse, just as different teacher have different teaching methods, different students have different learning methods.

At that, I'm not sure that you will both be covering the same ground. I understood that this thread was going to study the Stonewall system (for White or Black?), quite a handy opening for the relatively inexperienced. Its immediate aim is easily grasped, and you get experience in the handling of closed positions (which was a real problem for me as a beginner).

I can't imagine that easy19 will be covering the same ground. I haven't seen his thread, but if, as i hope, he is looking at endings, or even the middlegame, the two threads will complement each other.

Stay with it Janet, please.
Cheers,
Ion

my very modest tribute to discussion...
i understand Janet's mind and i agree. I was a teacher, not chess, and it's clear to me people who need to learn basics (like friends in this forum near 1000 points in rating) do need absolute certain knowledge, not doubts or even alternatives. Good players can be (and i'm sure Janet and easy19 are) good teachers but it's difficult to give people who start learn the right way.
They can become really confused, even if teachers do their best. So if this was Janet's mind i agree and say it denotes hard decision for a young girl. My compliments.
To be honest, i also understand Steve's mind. It's a different pov of course but a valuable one.

ej :)
Janet just keep going
I do only the very basics of chess. and that is actually self study and not a real big deal.

you are doing the stonewall, that is like ion says a total different piece of pie... ( I do not think i can teach that very well to others so you are the writhe girl for it. )

and it is not my intentions to intervene in your plans.

To All....
Sorry i have not started yet. I have to go to Florida Saturday to get some Surgery done on my
focal chords(nothing really bad). I will be back on the 13th. I will then begin our project. Please
be patient as it will be well worth it. Janet
