Am I missing something here?

Is it just me or is the selection.... Message all team members no longer there? Did this feature get edited out? I just tried to send a message out to my team and that choice is no longer in the menu. Can someone please verify that I am not seeing things.

Thanks Ken (Captain of The Cartoon Platoon)

I think you're right Ken - how odd!

What on Earth? Did someone find a way to misuse this feature as well? The Team Messaging option is absolutely vital for a Captain of any large team...

Well I am glad I am not hallucinating. How can we find out what happened and get this fixed? We as captains need this feature.

If they don't make that feature available, we will have to use the team forum for simple messages. What a pain that will be-------

It wasn't there an hour ago. One captain did write the administrator. Glad it was restored.

Well johnclark, that was definitely fast. It's as if they accidentally removed during some routine update or something.

Still Missing
I just checked and it takes me to my teams forum

it's not fixed if all team messages are posted on the team forum - how do team members know to
check there? can all team members respond or is it just paid members who can respond?
johnclark

They call that an improvement
Yes, the link posts messages to the forum. Unless things have changed, all team members are notified on their game page that a new message has been posted on the team Forum and all can view the message. But only paying members can comment on the forum.

Gameknot would indeed make a most notable graduate thesis on the psychology of marketing. They are very good at it!

I went to the premium subscription link. There I found a highlighted area to contact gameknot. This is used I guess to ask questions regarding signing up? So I took the time to post pertaining to the missing message. Maybe they saw it and fixed the problem.? Glad its back once more.

Wait my mistake. I just checked and the 4th selection I see is Edit team info. I looked the rest of the list over and it has not been restored. Great!

Well, definitely not an improvement. Even if all the team members get notified when a new post has been made at the team Forums, not all of them will be bothered to read it. With the old system, you could essentially trust that your message was, in minimum, seen by all the team members.

I don't know if this is intended to be a permanent change, or a glitch. If it is supposed to be
permanent it is not acceptable to team "Block or Bleed". I am asking GK for an explanation
{which apparently no one has yet received} and directing them to this site to see how the
Captains are responding. I would ask all Captains to post their feelings here.

At the risk of being a nay-sayer here, I had an issue in my team recently where team members were being inundated with Team messages. A lot were being sent from me as their captain and my co-captain at the time. One or two members left the team because of the excess messages they were receiving. One of them put both me and the co-captain on "Ignore" so as to stop receiving these messages. Well, try as I might to get folks to post to the forum, it didn't work: the message to the whole team was too convenient. As much as I like the convenience of the Message the Team to get info out fast, it did have this problem: overuse by some captains. The forum may be a new habit to develop, but at least team members can have more control over the messages they get. It comes down to this: control for captains or control for team members. Perhaps this is the compromise position.

While I have not yet heard back from GK, Captain Mrmarmalade informs me that GK
is doing this because of stress on their servers. Accepting that, and the info contained
in the previous post, we still want to express our collective team opinion:
1} The limited access to the "forum" afforded to non premium players makes it now
impossible for them to to message the team.
2} Our team {Block or Bleed} frequently uses the forum to play games against GM's,
play consultive games against other teams, and play instructional games against
each other. The added "team messaging" to the forum will be extremely confusing.
3} The "send a message to my team" link allows any player to raise a team issue, or
concern, without high-handed Captains {such as myself} having the ability to delete.
4} It's just a darn convenient tool for Captain's that I would hate to lose, and had I been consulted in advance would have asked GK to attempt to find another way to fix the problem.

@klingle. Which GM's have you played against? Interesting.

Yes, despite my ability to see the silver lining in this, I agree that prior warning for captains to get organized and access to all team members, not just premium members are important issues.

There's a post by the GK staff at the main Forums that explains their reasoning:

gameknot.com

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By GK:

Please use the team forum for posting any messages intended for the entire team (click on "Teams" in the main menu). By default, everyone in the team is notified when there is a new post in the team forum (optionally can be turned off by each player) -- so it has exactly the same effect as sending a private message to everyone, but it produces much lower impact on the servers. The problem with sending a private message to the entire team is that we have to send a separate private message to each team member, which often avalanches out of control when the team has many members (replies, etc.). Plus, it's not possible to "unsubscribe" from such team-wide private messages (short of placing the person on one's ignore list). And it often triggered our internal "spam" protection for newer players (we automatically prevent newer players from sending private messages to many different players at the same time to protect everyone from spam).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can understand that the exchange might at times lead into an "avalanche" of messages sent back and forth among the team, and in that case, yes, I agree that the team Forum should be used because that's a far more convenient medium of discussion anyway. However, most of the time when a Captain needs to reach every team member individually, it is not with the intent of starting such discussion, but rather that they want to give a general announcement and nothing more. In that kind of situations, private messages are preferred, because they have much higher impact than the Forum posts.

As for the fact that the team members could not easily avoid receiving team messages, I wonder what is up with this degree of individualism when it comes to messages sent by team Captains? I mean, is it not the responsibility of every team members to remain available for the team Captain so that they can communicate if necessary, and vice versa? If you seriously have a team where members are refusing to receive messages from the team Captain, then that team is already in dire straits.

Team members should be able to put up with a certain degree of updates and announcements sent by their Captain; I'm sure GK can also agree with this. And let's not forget that GK has also implemented a "delete" button on the personal messaging function, that I find very convenient in removing any messages from my in-box that I find redundant AFTER I've read them through and realized that they really are redundant. Naturally the Captains should not use the team messaging feature to spam their members, either, but those instances must be rare, because a team with such Captain cannot be very popular one. It is my belief that the most instances of team-wide spam where probably perpetrated by the non-Captains of these teams.

My solution for the problem: allow team message feature for the Captains and co-Captains only. No more endless team-wide exchanges or spam from non-Captains, and only occasional, short-term load for the servers.

MaCa.

RE:Team Messages

I agree with klingle, it is a shame, we used the Team Message option lots and it is cruddy to say the least they did away with it. For $60.00 a year one would think they could communicate with the team. The problem of course is that not all players on the team can respond to notices, questions, etc., only subscribed members can actually post in team forums. Not such a premier chess battlefield place to say the least.

This is the weakest editor that all of the various chess players have, yet the cost for playing here is one of the most expensive, go figure.

I haven’t posted on this forum many times, but I follow the threads whenever I get a chance, and have found this Club to be very helpful.

I was unaware of the change in Team Messaging until I read it here,
I think maca post on 18-Jul-12 to be informative and I definitely support his solution “ My solution for the problem: allow team message feature for the Captains and co-Captains only. No more endless team-wide exchanges or spam from non-Captains, and only occasional, short-term load for the servers. “; at the very least, we pay a higher price for our membership and should not have our ability to lead our Teams effectively reduced.

I have continually re-posited items from nonpaying members in our team forum, is it a problem, Yes, is it necessary to make these members feel inclusive to the team, Yes.
Maybe our Team is different from others, but I have found that a very small percentage of team members actual uses the team forum, or at least posts on the forum. To rob them of the ability to receive important messages from the Team Capt/co-Capts, seems to be a travesty.

My 2 Cents Worth
Fred

RE:sad_but_true

Thank you sir, you are most kind. Your name really reflects the taking away of the Team message link, it is very sad but true state when for 60 bucks a year we can't send a message to the team but have to resort to the antiquated methods of single posting to each member. Arggg....

might be time to start team communications 'off-site' via email, either that or start a team club at your own expense that everyone on gk can read - neither option is particularly attractive to me. let's hope some solution will be found.
