Halloween Gambit: sk-cadavre-opa v Club Morphy
sk-cadavre-opa has volunteered to play a thematic consultation game against Club Morphy. The theme is the HALLOWEEN GAMBIT (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.Nxe5 Nxe5 5.d4...*

It's a fun gambit and promises a fun game.

The start date is December 1st.

The rules are easy:
- All members in Club Morphy are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
- sk-cadavre-opa will not view our discussion thread.
- Our time limits will be a max of 5 days to make moves. Within that time we suggest moves, discuss them and vote on them.
- I, jc, will serve as moderator and will post board diagrams and other notices that are essential to Club Morphy's play. As moderator, I will paticiapatw in the suggesting and discussing the moves. I vote only to break ties.

To quell my anxiety......... Is there anyone out there interested?

I'm in.
I played in a thematic a while back on the Halloween Gambit, and it was very exciting
and immensely tactical. I'm sure those games are available for those of you unfamiliar with it, and there may have been other thematics since. I also found excellent material on line (I'll have to look for it again) that enabled me to win quite a few games I might have lost otherwise (there are countless traps and counter-traps). All in all, a great and fun gambit to play, and I'm looking forward to it!

Interesting opening
I have not played this opening before, but it is as ironbutterfly describes. If you want to see
what other people have done there are several good discussions online. For a quick look that
gives you an incomplete idea of how dangerous this opening can be for black take a look at the
video below.

I am still tied up at work often these days, but will contribute when I have a moment.

I will join in the game as well, I have played this opening OTB and it makes for an interesting
game.

re: Video & Article on the Halloween Gambit
Thank you for sharing these links, JC. I looked over the article and realized I have played this opening before, although I wasn't aware of its name (C47): 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Nc3 Nf6 4. Nxe5. I look forward to checking out the video. This will be an interesting game!

Halloween Gambit
Welcome to the consultation game against me. I had alot of fun in the match up against antagonistknight (formerly hbird1830), even joining halfway through and having a few decisions go against me. So I decided to offer myself as the next target for the club!

I have a very short history with the Halloween Gambit. I came up against it for the first time, whilst playing Black, in an OTB game. After 4.Nex5 I was insulted, thinking that my opponent had played a weak opening move and was hoping to simply take me out of lines I "know" and out of my comfort zone. The match ended after a tiny 13 moves, where I resigned, feeling pretty stupid with the board looking like this: -

After Nxd5, Bb6+ wins white's Queen and pretty much the match.

Since then, I started a mini-tournament on gameknot to explore the opening. The entry requirements were 2200-2500, so I like to believe that we're getting closer and closer to "best lines" as the tournament progresses. One of those players has managed a win with Black so far, proving the hypothesis at the start of the tournament by myself and several others that Black can, with good play, take advantage of the sacrificed material.

I present to you, the finished games.
krill vs twobking game
seewolf vs krill game
seewolf vs sk-cadavre-opa game

Ensure you pay particular attention to all three games; Krill shows that winning is definately possible whereas myself and twobking show how to lose with the obvious responses to 5.d4.

I'm expecting this to be a real challenge, playing an opening I'm not overly familiar with and against the collective brainpower of the club should be alot of fun! Bring your A game people!

thanks to sk!
Thanks to sk for the heads up on the mini-tournament he set up ("A Strange Gambit," started 10/07/09) and access to it! [Since his players are rated 2200-2500 I won't bother referring you to the mini-T in '04-05 where I went 16-0 against players much, much lower rated  )]

I haven't been able to find really recent material on the HG, but here are some other articles/game collections that I think are worth looking at:
Paul Keiser's "Critical Lines in the HG" (2 parts, 9/03, updated 10/05, at chessville.com)
Tim Krabbe's "A Breeze in the Sleepy 4-Knights Game" (3/'00 at chesscafe.com)
41 games by Grigor Minchev (from '86-94 at chessgames.com, where there is also a database
of 90 games from 1890 (!) - 2009.
I'm sure you'll find other sites/external links as well (in Wikipedia, YouTube, etc.)

Thank you sk and ironbutterfly!
This is definitely right up my alley for fun. I enjoy exploring new opening lines with resources of texts, articles and informed opponents- and in this case, informed team mates. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this learning opportunity.

Thanks again,
jc

In this thread?
John,
Are we going to be discussing moves in this thread or elsewhere?
coopershawk

move 5 for black
We can move 5. . Ng6 or 5 . .Nc6. It has been said about this position that ". . whichever
move one takes, he wishes he had taken the other." (Dr. N.F. Cooke in the "Milwaukie Sunday
Telegraph" 1883)

5. . Nc6
I am liking Nc6, but apparently Ng6 is also playable and both have serious traps and
drawbacks, so I am not insistent on that move.

5. ... Ng6
I would prefer Ng6.
ironbutterfly
01-Dec-09, 06:53

5.......Ng6
I played Ng6 and Nc6 about equally in the HG thematic I played in; both involve risks,
but I think ......Ng6 is stronger. Notice also that in the very strong thematic that sk gave
us access to, all five players play Ng6 as black (4 of them exclusively so far) and only one
has played Nc6. The total games are 11 with Ng6 and 2 with Nc6.

5. ... Ng6
My humble vote is for Ng6.

Voting is waived as discussion reflects agreement with 5...Ng6.
