what stops black from moving Ke6 or Ke8 instead of Ke7?

You're right in that Ke8 leads to a losing position for black, but with Ke6 and Nxc6, couldn't black prevent checkmate by moving the queen out to protect the g4 square?

1. ... Bxd6
2. Ne5+ Ke6
3. Nxc6 Qg5

Black is still hurting, but not dead.

Yes, rich, you're right. Qg5 does stop the mate. After d4, I believe White has the advantage.
