Checking gains a move
Pushing the pawn forces the king to side step. This allows the knight to take the rook AND force a check, gaining a move... Preventing the forward black pawns from promoting.

havoc without black rook substainig those two passed pawns white king is able to prevent both pawns' queening,I'm still convinced is better to catch immediately the rook instead of loosing a precious e6 passed pawn.
