You are loosing your knight to bishop where as if he move Nf4, he has to give his bishop to avoid checkmate

nilco, 2. g3 stops it, allowing g2 as escape square

nf4

nf4 freezes the rook and blocks the king's escape route. This allows for mate on the h file, or should the rook move, Qxg3 is mate.
