better alternative
1. Nf5 Rxg2+
2. Kxg2 Nf4+

...seems much more effective. the actual solution i just don't understand.

After 1....Nf4, Black is threatening mate with Rxg2 as well as NxQ, so RxR is forced. After NxQ the result is Black traded a rook for a queen, which is a very good deal.

Your alternative fails to 3. RxN, sorry.

solution understood, however "the better alternative" keeps better, because "Rxg2+" gives us another pawn

After
1.Nf5 Rxg2+
2.Kxg2 Nf4+
3.Rxf4

Black has given up a rook and knight for a pawn. Sorry, but I fail to see how that is
better. White now has a queen, 2 knights, 2 rooks and 5 pawns vs a queen, one knight,
one rook and 5 pawns.

Rxf4 completely passed me. Sorry. You were victim of me looking through a key hole upon the board. Thank you very much.
