Before anything else, I believe both players should review their short-range game: consciously look for one-move and two-move threats and possible captures. This cuts both ways: threats you can mount and captures you can make; but also those your opponent can mount and make. It will become second nature, but to begin with, it has to be a conscious effort, and you have to be disciplined about this. Think of it as holding a mental shotgun to your head: examine the position piece by piece, pawn by pawn if that's what it takes, and make sure you have left nothing loose to be taken in one or two moves; nor that your opponent hasn't left anything hanging that can be picked up free, gratis and for nothing. Eliminate, say, 90% of these short range oversights, and watch at least 4-500 rating points add themselves to your rating.
