Overkill. White had the choice between two immediate checkmates.

Protect your pieces (and pawns). Guard them or move them from danger, and don't place them where they can be taken for less than their value. Remember the normal values of your pieces: knight and bishop about 3 pawns, rooks about 5 and queens about 9. Very occasionally the position will alter values (which is how you get spectacular Q sacrifices) but in general, treat these values like gold.
