Annotated chess game

I must have missed something a move or so ago - probably overlooked that Black retired the bishop only to g6 instead of f7. White's game suddenly looks good again.

In fact, despite being even material wise, I think that white is winning.

More immediately forceful would have been 22.Bh6 Bf8 23.Ne4. But where to from there is not so easy to answer. Sooner or later, Black plays ...Kh8, when White will have to pull back and rethink.

That is how move order can make a difference. After 22.Bh6 Bf8 23.Ne4 Qe7! puts paid to Nxf6.

I'm learning more about move order since kenneth_fiore_3 has emphasized it's important. What's more is that I started teaching that to my student in one of her annotations.

Which is also what I would've done.

The masked battery, as ION calls it since it is a discover attack.

Going a pawn down might have had its upsides. E.g. 24...Kh8 (not exactly a 'nothing move', but sensibly getting the King off a sensitive file, and making way for a rook) 25.Nxc5 Qc7! 26.Be2(?) Bxc5 27.Bxc5 Qa5! wins Black a piece. Instead, 26.Ne4? is axed by 26...Nxe3 27.Rxe3 Qb6. Best seems 26.Na4, taking the knight away from the action, after which Black can begin operations of his own on the King's side by ...Rg8 or maybe ...g6.

Ooo... This liooks very risky. Maybe it was high time for ...Kh8.

Which is how I'd also proceed as that would go through my thought process here.

White has a very strong attack now!

Although this opens the d-file, upon which stand Black's Queen and rook, Black can make no use of it. Taking with the other pawn would have been equally strong.

This turns out to be over-optimistic - way over-optimistic. White has (had) a strong attack going, but it was no 'gimme', and seems to require a regrouping. Maybe 30.Qe2, to preempt ...h5 might have been the go, as 30.h4 h5 31.Qe2 g4 seems to tie up White's attack. Sooner or later, Whire will have to try and lever open the position with his h-pawn, and that might need to have a rook behind it. That suggests a plan that includes Kf2 and R1h1.
