A famous ending
E. Z. Adams vs. Carlos Torre
Annotated by last_archimedean (1564): Just about anyone who reads about chess knows the famous ending of this game, how an ordinary amateur's brilliant Queen maneuvers forced GM Torre to give up the ghost. But have you ever wondered how the game got to that position in the first place? Adams aggressively attacks the Philidor's Defense setup Torre chooses to play. Bringing out his Queen early... but in this game he makes it work. …

Annotated by mattdw (1489): This game played in the Chess coaching club mini-tournament is not so much an analytical annotation of a game in the usual sense but more just my personal (and very brief) thoughts at various points. The aim of the tournament (and these 'annotations') is to allow the players taking part to discuss the strategic and tactical factors of the finished games. The stronger players then being able to …

Annotated by dieselengine9 (1625): I'm a king's pawn kind of guy. It's what I do. So is Dave. I chose the king's knight this time to pressure e5. I thought I was conceding d5. I thought I knew Dave. I don't. The smarter move here would have probably been Nc3. I usually don't make the smarter move. and Dave gains the advantage. I tried something different here. I usually don't overuse my queen, especially so early in the…

Annotated by ethansiegel (1986): Dean has a theory that if he can make it past move 28 with me, he'll win. If not, he'll lose. This one goes to 14 before he gives up. There's a nice theme to this one, which is all about development, and is a great example of how to win quickly despite making no extremely good moves. This move is just fine: the Philidor defense. Gives black a solid position, but gives white a little more…

Annotated by abro (1686): Phillidor Defense Nxd4 is another way. White does not want to move his queen from this position, if he moves then 4. Qxd4 was wrong. This is very intersting move, if it is not book move then write it after my name :) ... White's idea is simple, if Black moves his queen then she becomes more passive, if Be7 then Qxg7, if Nf6 then White can ruin Black's kingside pawn structure by BxN PxN…

Annotated by bassking12 (1399): As I don't know hardly any ways to open the game up, I like to make this my first move as white. More of my standard proceedings I see this move a lot but I don't understand it as it blocks in the dark squared bishop. I prefer this over Nxd4 as this gets my queen involved in the game early. Sometimes it pays off, others not so. I'm a gambler by nature. Pinning down the knight for now.…
