White's other playable options are Nc3, f4, and c3. Risky, but interesting options are d4 and b4. And unsharp options are Bc4 and d3. This is Black's most flexible move, because it doesn't immediately commit to a plan, and simply opens lines for development.… |

Annotated by jaybekay (1860): The books say this move is not to be recommended due to a potential fork threat on e5. Instead, ..Be7 is more usual. This leaves a hole at d5 which White is able to exploit shortly. In fact, Black's pawn structure has two permanent holes (d5 and d6).
