I don't know what to tell you Fred. At one point, I was desperate for co-captains. And, to be honest that was also on me for being overcritical of one co-captain when there was no matches since he is a captain of another team. But, I was able to find one, and while I'd be happy to have another, I'm ok with what I have. That's because the co-captain that I currently is doing an exceptionally good job. But, it appears that you have a bigger team, and my only suggestion for getting another co-captain is to just believe in yourself, I hate to say. And, one of the things that goes into it is a team invite that's, specifically, looking for someone that wants to be a co-captain. Afterall, that's how I find one.

In fact
Not only did I find one, but the former co-captain became captain of another team. And, I was able to help him find a co-captain with that advice in this thread. gameknot.com

Make sure you ask in your team for any interest in that, but in the forums, not in private messages, that way you know when someone is looking at team forum posts, as that is promising.

You can also see when you manage your members who would be able to currently be promoted. I would highly recommend not promoting them without asking, but it can reveal potential candidates.

I today just had someone show some serious interest. They've been on the team a couple years, and I could promote them right now. I'll see how that develops, but don't be surprised to see a new co-captain on my team real soon

I do have that new co-captain on my team, and he's been a great help, and hopefully soon another one will be promoted who is eager in helping. I have yet another who wanted to try helping out later this year if their schedule clears up. I've never had this much potential for help on a team before from all three co-captains, so hopefully that works out.

We'll see if it is the most help I've ever had though, I've had a couple co-captains in the past who were capable of handling all the team's matches if I wanted them too lol

SWAT needs another co-captain- if anybody knows of a person who is dependable, honest and fair, please get in touch with me. The criteria is simple: honest and fair, always, to both teams.

My thinking is that the best place to find a co-captain is inside the team ranks.

How do you determine a co-captain's eligibility, Bum?

A co-captain has to have a platinum membership, which costs $20 more per year than a gold membership. I have had two people back out of becoming a co-captain once they realized they had to fork over additional money.

I have to admit that I don't like this requirement. The team captains and co-captains are the ones who make these chess teams work, and GameKnot's main unique factor (compared to other chess sites, like chess.com) is that they have team play. If anything, GameKnot should give team captains and co-captains free memberships, not charge them more.

Doubtful Gameknot would be willing to make those changes, but you never know.

For me, I have recently had three team members show interest in trying it out. One of them was fairly recently promoted, already having the required membership. Another also has the required membership, but is too busy at the moment, but hopes that will change soon. And then the third doesn't have the required membership, but is very much interested and willing to buy it and I believe they hope to soon.

All three of them are within my team, I just asked in the forum if anyone was interested and I was surprised as of late. Granted, my team is big, so more opportunity for interest, but admittedly, I did not expect a couple of these interested ones to be interested at all until all of a sudden recently, so you never know when and where help can come in.

That is great Joe! I am very happy for you. For several years now you have been the only person setting up matches on your very large team. You have basically been a one-man band.

We also have a large team, and what we did was invest a bit of time into building up a strong group of captains which form our management team. For matchmaking we actually have two extra captains, for a total of six; technically it is one captain and 5 co-captains. (We also have another co-captain who is responsible for overseeing Vote Chess and team instructional activities who is not at all involved in matchmaking.) When one of us is on vacation, or ill, or are going through a busy time period, we rotate in one of the captains currently on the bench. Rotating captains is another way of keeping folks fresh. Anyhow, even with all of the great work done by our management team I still have to spend at least a couple of hours every day on GK making matches, in addition to the 1.5-2 hours I am on the site playing my matches. So, I have no idea how you have been able to manage doing everything on your on, and being extremely successful at it, especially at such a young age (you must be the youngest captain on GameKnot!). Anyhow, I am really glad you are getting some well deserved assistance!

I have had help at times, but I'm hoping it becomes long term, it will certainly help, thank you

I do want to do what you've mentioned Scott, have co-captains without them actually at the co-captain role. I want someone to perhaps manage team stats, someone else to handle things like vote games, perhaps someone else as a chess tutor role (I've seen teams do that here and there) and the ability to rotate with the matchmaking co-captains if I have enough available. I think I'm a ways away from that, but the good news is, a Platinum or Titanium Membership isn't required for all those roles, so that opens up more opportunity that I hope to take advantage of soon.

I think I was the youngest for a time, I think that now goes to the captain of The Barmy Army. I turn 24 in May, I think he's later than me. Hard to believe that I've been doing this since I was 16 though, wow. I wouldn't be here if I didn't enjoy it

I think the youngest captain I saw was only 13, the team 'Angry Sharks' or 'Mighty Sharks' I think, but they weren't around much longer after I showed up it seemed.

I do fall behind a lot still, I'm catching up right now, but the team would easily be around 450 active matches if I could regularly keep up. I've managed to keep things going so far, somehow without timing out in my games. The closest I've cut it is 19 minutes left without emergency postponement available

Membership for free is very limited
Platinum membership is all that is needed to make a team or be a co-captain

Gold is a fair membership if you play less games and mini-tournaments

Silver is the lowest plan and used to have a special price for a year, they kept it for several years

It can still be had this year at a price lower than Gold. But I believe Silver was made for short

term use to be a monthly plan instead of being a free membership plan with all the limited options

I imagine there isn't many with the Titanium Membership, as the main thing you get more of is more games, unless you're really into the post-game computer analysis. I haven't seen many with over 100 active games, and those who I have seen with those numbers, I don't think even half of them are a captain/co-captain.

I don't see myself playing over 100 games
I'm usually at 10 or less
I think GK just wants us to believe they need our money
RMR re-accruing-Monthly revenue

They do a decent job in keeping the chess server platform up and running.

SWAT still need a co-captain. Please spread the message. I don't want to poach players form teams, but all of us know players who are not on teams and with the correct subscription. Please inform them.

Keep asking within your team as well, you never know. It's a slow process for me, but I do have two interested who have been on the team already for a while. You never know, someone might suddenly show interest.

It is at the moment just a thought..

Time. That is my problem. I don't have time. And now I am being tutored as well, to improve my game a bit, so I have even less of that particular commodity.

Is lifetime gold like a decaf coffee subscription gift?
Hoping someone knows this—a member is interested in promoting but is a “lifetime gold” member. (I don’t know what that cost him.)
Will he need to simply discard that pre-purchase and start paying annually at platinum level, or is there some accommodation? I asked customer support and am waiting for their reply.
Thanks for any insight,
Eric

I think he can upgrade to lifetime platinum at a little extra fee. It will not be as expensive; they calculate the difference between gold and platinum and add the lifetime subscription. I paid the platinum fee a few years ago, and will upgrade to lifetime titanium when I can afford it and the offer comes along. I'm not in a hurry at the moment. Before you take my word for the calculation of the lifetime platinum subscription, I think it is advisable to wait for GK to respond.

Lifetime subscriptions
...are only offered periodically by GameKnot. When offered, the past policy has been pay the difference between lifetime level x and lifetime level x+1 to be upgraded. I have done this twice: Lifetime Gold > Lifetime Platinum > Lifetime Titanium.
Unless GameKnot makes an exception however, the upgrade can only be purchased when Lifetime Memberships are offered. But check with GameKnot, they may make an exception. After all - money talks.

The cost of upgrade
bevo-xv is correct that we can upgrade periodically if we have lifetime membership which is usually offered near the end of year at the time of X-mas and new year. It is not offered every year.

I received the following message from GK to upgrade,
Lifetime membership upgrade:
Also a quick reminder that while the Lifetime option is not available for purchase for new subscribers any longer, if you already have a Lifetime membership, you can upgrade to a higher level via the links below.

If you'd like to play more games and mini-tournaments at the same time, or to get more post-game computer analyses each month, or to start your own team, or be a team co-captain, etc., or to simply support your (hopefully) favorite chess website, GameKnot. You can compare the benefits for different levels on the main Premium Memberships page.

» Upgrade to Platinum Lifetime membership ($99)
» Upgrade to Titanium Lifetime membership ($199)

We would very much appreciate your support as well! Please allow up to 2 business days for the payment to be credited to your account.

Knights Templar
Looking for an experienced co captain - i know they are a rare breed.
We have a laid back philosophy. Co captains can follow their own system so long as they adhere to a couple of basic matching rules.
