Suggested New Feature: take back button for unrated games
I regularly play unrated practice games with friends where we experiment with new openings. I would like to see a "take back button" for bone head moves in these unrated practice games. My idea is that the "take back" would only be available for non-rated games and must be accepted/approved by the opponent.

If you would also like to see a "take back" feature for unrated games, please support my post on the Gameknot Forum gameknot.com .

Thanks,
jc

As playwright John Ford wrote, "there is a sweetness that rots the eater"
Sounds appealing -- but is it good?

Winning a serious game of chess is not about finding the best next move --
it is about finding the best plan, the best target-sequencing, the best sequence of moves.

Putting in a take-back button won't help take back a flawed plan, just reverse an individual move in a flawed plan.

By legitimizing shoddy thinking and moves made by reflex and not based on thought, such a feature would hardly encourage a player's progress in improving his or her strength.

By contrast, a feature that in my own chess progress would be of help would be to allow players to switch sides
during the unrated, "practice" game they are playing.

If you live with the consequences of your mistakes, that's when you begin to get better.
