Panic or just careless, thinking Black was throwing away more material? This capture is a losing mistake - the dear old discovered check, double attack motif - what I call the masked battery.

Wins the game. +++ I realise I mis-spoke in my previous comment. The check is direct, but in playing the check, the bishop unmasks - 'discovers' - the rook's attack agianst the queen. You should learn these (masked battery) types of double attack - a great tactic to pull off. The motif crops up quite often, and you can use the threat of them indirectly to defend something or to gain something. Check this game out for several examples of the motif! gameknot.com

Not a good defence, as this simply makes things worse. Better was 24.Kf2. Even so, the material deficit should be decisive.

But that was impossible to do once White had taken gxh3. One must be alert to tactics of that kind.
