Annotated chess game

I like 31...Rd3, here, attacking the White queen, and preparing to double rooks on the d-file.

This would have been fine with some preparation: 32....Rd4, attacking g4, followed by 33...Rfd8. Something like this: 32....Rd4 33.h3 Rfd8 34.Rxe7 Qd1 35.Re1 ... (Better 35.Qxd1, actually, keeping a rook on the board, but run with this) 35...Qxe1 36.Qxe1 Rd1 37.Qxd1 Rxd1ch and wins with the extra rook.

If you wanted to protect the pawn, 33...e5 was way better, and Black would still have had fine winning chances. Also Ok would have been 33...Kf7 or 33...Rd4 (NOT 33...Rd7, though, on account of 34.Qe6ch, winning for white). I much prefer the 33...e5 move in this situation.

Now the game is back to level, even though Black has a nominal plus-2 material advantage.

Not sure why that's a 'bad' move. It looks all right to me. The pin will be broken next turn by 35...Kg7 and Black is fine.

White is after the b-pawn.

Well that wasted two moves to do nothing. Much better was to play 36...Rd4 37.Qxb5 Rxg4ch. Note that protecting the black b-pawn would have been horrible: 36...Rd5?? 37.Qa8ch 38.Kg7 Qxd5. In fact I would have preferred to play ...Kg7 at move 35.

He ought to have taken the b-pawn, with a rough equality.

These advances are doing Black no good. Black ought to have left the pawns alone until after breaking the pin.

40.Kxg4 was perfectly safe and gave White the edge.

40...Rf3, would have picked up the f5-pawn. Also reasonable, though less good, would have been 40...R3d6. Bringing the rook back to d8 does nothing for Black's game at all.
