. . .
damilfi indicated he would not be available to judge in October, so the rotation came back to fatcat2. Since brigadecommander has indicated an interest in judging, she can take November if she still wishes to do so. If easy19 is interested in judging, he is welcome to take December. Thanks to all of our judges for their time and effort in this challenge and thanks to all our participants for their interest in the club.

I can judge also
If I am deemed to have the proper credentials.

Here is my OCT entry already, since ratings seemed to factor in to last month, my opponent in this one was roughly 100 pts higher than me at the start.

damalfis game
I dont understand the move 22.)e4, Ra6 for black, and why this causes white to withdraw his queen. The only thing I can think it might be fore is that Ra6 is infact a bad move, so white is able to move the queen and hence the tempo. Is this so? can someone please explain this to me?

My October entry.
Its not a great game. However I liked the end result. I was especially pleased when Fritz 11 gave my final move two exclamation marks. Rxb3!!

The judge shouldn't let that influence them however since I'm sure there will be other more interesting games entered from other players. I'm just posting it to see if other players in the club enjoy the ending.

Damalfi's game
Black moves the rook to protect the bishop he then wants to play Nd7. He wants to trap the queen. This doesn't work because when he played 21.Bc6 attacking the rook on h1 he forces white to play 22.e4 this gives the queen a place to run before the knight moves.

Sorry for all the trouble shooting questinos

I played my game of the month on another site, how do I get it to work on gameknot?

I was just reviewing the past game of the month
I really enjoyed the way that kendo-ka played the Sicilian defense to begin and then seamlessly transfer into a strong kid, picked his opponent apart and finalized things with a solid back rank mate.

The only way to do it I think is that you and I play an unrated game, you tell me which moves I have to make until that game is finished and then you will be able to make a link to post it.

But: I know you can't post it as game of the month, because in the first post here you can read that only games played on GK are valuable to enter.

New Judging Stipulations
Fatcat2 has agreed to fill the role as judge for the month of October.

Since fatcat2 established the "Game of the Month" idea and subsequent thread, I have decided to alter the judging stipulations.

Starting with November, there will be 3 judges for each month. The primary and moderator judge will be fatcat2. By moderator judge, he will break any tie votes. The other 2 judges will be chosen according to the following rotation:

brigadecommander
hbird1830
easy19
kendo-ka
untateve
damalfi

As such the scheduled judges for November will be fatcat2, brigadecommander, and hbird1830. The judges for December will be fatcat2, easy19, and kendo-ka and so forth.

I will verify the rotating judges for each particular month in case a scheduled judge needs to be skipped for that month as was the case of damalfi for the month of October.

Thank you for your understanding of this process change as well as the participation of all our judges and "Game of the Month" entrants.

To answer easy19, you have to extract them from the thread.

Question about judging games from easy19
You will share the role in December with fatcat2 (moderator judge) and kendo-ka. You will have to check with the two of them, but I believe the games are extracted from this thread. Please don't hesitate to shoot them or me a private message if you have any questions / concerns about this process, or you can always post your questions / concerns in this thread.

Good luck and thanks for your interest in this challenge and the club.

How will this work with the two judge system?
Will the two judges divide the games in half and then each picks a winner from his/her group and then the two judges come together to decide the better of the two games?

OR

Will each of the two judges review all of the games and then discuss amongst themselves which is the best game and why?

(I know the 3rd judge is only to break ties)

Shared Judge System
A 3 person team will fill the role of judge for each month starting with November with fatcat2 as moderator judge since the challenge was his idea. All 3 judges will provide input and discussion of the games submitted. fatcat2 will submit the results.

I will be unable to judge this month, or anytime in the near future. My computer at home died and I do not/will not have the finances to replace it for quite a while. I am able to play through my games only on my 30 minute lunch break at work where I have access to a computer. So you will have to remove me from the list for the time being.

hbird
Thanks for reminding me, hbird. I will make a notation in my records. Just let me know when you are able to participate as judge again, and I will add you back to the rotation. I hope you are able to secure another computer soon. We very much appreciate all you do / have done for the club.

Multi judge
I like the idea... even if it means a lot more work for them. Not only the game themselves, but the discussion and agreement between them.
You know I am overbusy, but the idea of be one of the judging team it's appealing to me. Anyway, if we have three judges... can they put one of their games into the competition? I think no... a lot of complications can merge from that. But maybe this leaves us, at the present moment, with very few people allowed to sumbit a game...

As for annotated versions: I think it can be up to the judges wheter if to use the annotated version or not (when available). Maybe a first glance without, then a closer look using it.

I am annotated games' fan. I like to annotate most of my games, as if I will able (maybe as a retired old man   to review them, or the dream of having some 2000 player reviewing them and teach me something (as if they have the time to do that! I tried...).

But this doesn't mean the "originality" of the submitted games will change because of the annotations... specially when the judge is much more skillful than the player!

Anyway, for the next times, I will submit both the not annotated and the annotated version.
Unless a firm decision is made by the group... I will stick to it, no problem.

Annotated Games
I think annotated games are more important when the judge's rating is significantly below the rating of the entrant. Speaking for myself, I sometimes find it difficult to understand purpose behind a move of a player several hundred rating points above me. It's hard to judge a game without that knowledge.

And again, if we make the annotations public, it can only raise the general awareness of our club.

insane drawing skillz
The game was a thematic position that started from moving 7 I was playing black, it ended with 3 pawns and a bishop versus a king a bishop, opposite bishop. I think white could have won around the move when I let him into my light square, but it was a long win, i don't think white saw it, even my analysis took a while to find it, anyways enjoy.

Draw
I'm not sure at what point you believe black could have won? This is a bishop of opposite colour end game with whites bishop covering all the light squares and black has no way to win. As far as I can tell the game should have ended in a draw at move 47.

October: Game of the Month results
Hi all,

I have finally finished judging the entries for October's Game of the Month contest. I felt that the standard was particularly high this month, and I am very glad this competition has taken off so well. However, I felt that the two games mentioned below showed the exceptionally high quality worthy of a prize:

Winner: damalfi
damalfi's game was consistently well-played. His opening was principled, and he developed all his pieces and pointed them at Black's kingside. White's middlegame attack, particularly with the rook sacrifice on move 19, was perfectly played. I personally expected the attack to be over once the queens were exchanged, but with the accurate move 26.e6!! White trapped Black's king and prepared a checkmating sequence with rook and two bishops. Congratulations damalfi!

Runner-up: jbravo58d
Every judge has his own criteria, and I have to admit that I, personally, am always impressed by two things: a sacrificial attack, and an accurate queen trap. Queens are always hard to trap due to their mobility, and I was immensely impressed by jbravo58d's perfect trapping of Black's queen on the a2-square. Well played!

Bravo jbravo
I found it surprising to win, just in a personal moment of overbooking.
Anyway, I couldn't avoid to look through all the games, and of course the easy19's entry was really a very complex game, much deeper than my skill (I would be glad to have an annotated version).
About jbravo's game, I want to say that he sure will have won if only he had played, instead of the last move, Ba3+, followed by Qc7# (leaving his knight on take with check in the meanwhile!)  .
His move was definitory too, since black could not save himself anyway.
But the good thing is that the queen trapping seems to have been planned since the first moment he left the a2 pawn "en prise"...

I think that, even if I am very busy, I have been participating on this forum long enough, and if you think I shall cooperate in the judging task, I will for sure.
